Education Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohamed has hinted at upgrading Eregi Teachers Training College into a University. Eregi TTC is locaded in Kakamega County.
In a tweet after touring the college, the CS said that the institution has been consistent in providing quality education.
“Eregi TTC in Kakamega County, has been consistent in producing quality teachers and we are exploring the possibilities of upgrading the institution to a University,” the CS said through her Twitter handle.
Eregi TTC is one of the few remaining teacher training colleges in Kenya after several of them had been converted into constituent colleges of leading universities.
Kenyans Unhappy about Converting Eregi TTC to University
However, Kenyans on Twitter were skeptical of the move urging the government to let the institution be.
“Spare the ttc. The overcapacity at university level notwithstanding the country still needs technical colleges” twitted @mdoeidijackson in reply to the CS.
@KoechBenard replied “Laughable, and “Cryable” at the same time. Something is wrong in the way Africans think. No wonder Chinese are not taking us seriously.”
“Don’t convert every institution into universities, think about our manpower capacity to manage these universities first. lecturers, infrastructure, employment e.t.c. Talk about signing performance contract with teachers and localization,” @Omugaomuga replied to the tweet by the CS.
Teacher training colleges have been instrumental in absorbing students who failed to meet cut off points to join university.
These students got opportunities in TTCs and went on to become important pillars of the education system.
The government is planning to phase out P1 teachers.
This will need time to be achieved as many Kenyans are calling on government to leave TTCs alone.
“Quite annoying by the mention that another TTC will be upgraded to a university. Madam Amina build the university, leave the TTC alone, reason why youths can’t create their own employment!!!” twitted @Wasusui.
“Madam CS kindly upgrading these colleges makes the initial Use to bring forth TECHNICAL HANDS ON SKILLED trainees. It’s leaving a gap in the market then we complain of many jobless youth. Reconsider the UPGRADES kindly,” said @Wairimup
