Former Senate Speaker Ekwe Ethuro has been appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta as the new chairman of the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
President Uhuru Kenyatta made the appointments on Friday 21st September 2018 shortly after signing the controversial Finance Bill 2018 into law.
Mr Ethuro takes over from Mr Ndegwa Wachira who was appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta as HELB chairman in 2016.
Mr Wachira’s term came to an end in May 2018 as he had been appointed by the president for a period of two years.
The former Senate Speaker has been appointed to serve in that capacity for a period of three years starting 20th September 2018.
Ekwe Ethuro lost the Senate Speaker’s position after the 2017 General Election to former Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka.
Born in 1963, Mr Ethuro graduated from the University of Nairobi in 1988 with a BSc in Agriculture.
He was the fourth person during that time from Turkana district to get a university degree.
Additionally, Mr Ethuro holds an MSc degree from the Clemson University, South Carolina, United States.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has also appointed Chris Musando’s widow Eva Buyu Musando to the board of the Export Processing Zone.
Chris Musando was killed in the run up to the 2017 general elections and his killers are yet to be found.
