Being a comrade is such a nice occupation. Enjoying the full freedom in college together with the wonderful slogan A comrade is always right . As a comrade, you’ll be right even if you know you are very wrong.
However, despite the fact that it is nice to be a comrade, we still several challenges. Some of these challenges are completely out of our control. For instance, we lack school fees; and we deal with tribalism at times. We may also face stigmatization by your friends but the most serious one is lack of upkeep money.
As a matter of fact, it is true that many of the students if not all ,occasionally go to bed hungry due to lack of upkeep money. As much as it is hard to imagine a student going without food when there is HELB and financial help from family, kwa ground story ni different.
In as much as it is true that some students misuse money in clubs drinking or for any other reasons, there are those who do not have that privilege. There are genuinely starving students across campuses whose cases are often never discussed.
When nothing is forthcoming, such students are forced to get involved in criminal acts like stealing, robbery and even prostitution for ladies. This is never by choice but some of these students are just looking to to get something for the stomach.
Now that we have realized this, how can such students be helped?
The government has tried and still doing its best by offering us with bursaries through different avenues. We have buersaries offered by the university, county and even constituency bursaries. In addition, there is HELB loans which the needy students can as well apply and be offered provided there is an agreement of later payment.
The corporate world is also doing its part through their different bursary and scholarship opportunities for exemplary students. These all go a long way in helping the needy students especially if they are provided in a transparent manner.
We also have a part to play in helping our colleagues on campus. If you feel that your classmate is struggling to find something to eat, help them out. Share with them part time job opportunities through which they can earn and fend for themselves. Let us all be our sister’s keepers.
