When Covid-19 struck, we all knew that things are going to change and one of the most affected industries is the beauty industry. Pageants have been cancelled and many models who had said ‘this is my year to shine on the runway’ back in January have had to cancel their resolutions. However, by organizing the Kenya’s Unforgettable Beauty pageant, Audrey Rendo and her team at Beauty Pageants Kenya made sure that not all models’ dreams were going to wait until after Covid-19.
…and the winner is…
At least not for one Marryanne Angila, the now reigning Miss Kenya’s Unforgettable Beauty 2020.
After a rigorous 5-challenge competition, Maryanne Angila was on Monday crowned Kenya’s Unforgettable Beauty, Kenya’s first ever virtual beauty contest that was organized by Beauty Pageants Kenya.
Marryanne is a former student at the Technical University of Mombasa.
Catherine Kariuki emerged 1st Runners-up while Berline Nemali and Phelister Nyamongo scooped the 2nd and 3rd Runners-up respectively. Other six contestants were Pickly Cherono, Keziah Mwendwa, Angela Nzisa and Pamela Kimathi.
The contest ran for a week, featuring the social media challenge, eloquence challenge, catwalk challenge, evening gown challenge and social awareness/ oration challenge.
Recognizing that the onset of the novel Corona virus pandemic made it impossible to organize an actual pageant, the organizers asked the contestants to hand in their challenges through photos and video submissions.
The judges then made a decision from the material that had been handed in. This pageant has come at a time that international pageants around the world are being cancelled due to low participation and anxiety surrounding local and International travel.
“Pageants depend so much on corporate sponsorship and most firms are barely surviving these hard economic times, we can anticipate slashing of the marketing and public relations budgets. This will hit pageant organizers hard,” said Audrey Rendo, founder of Beauty Pageants Kenya, the principal organizer of the Kenya’s Unforgettable Beauty pageant.
“I believe we can still hold, not just pageants, but many other events with the resources that we have if we creatively adapt to the new normal. We can’t keep whining about the things we can’t do, instead we have to seek new horizons and expand the scope of our creativity,” said Ms Rendo, who is also founder of a pageant coaching startup, Reign Pageant Academy.
The winner Maryanne Angila will now take part in the global virtual pageant, World’s Unforgettable Beauty.
