
Kenyatta University is the highest ranked Kenyan institution of higher learning in terms of non-state funding of research and development.
This is according to a 2018 report by CPS Research International on the state of research funding in Kenyan universities.
The top 10 most funded Universities (Non-State Funding):
- Kenyatta University
- University of Nairobi
- Strathmore University
- Mount Kenya University
- Aga Khan University
- Moi University
- Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology
- KCA
- Egerton University
- USIU
The top 10 positions were shared equally among private and public institutions of higher learning with the top 5 positions being largely occupied by private institutions led by Strathmore university.

However, the University of Nairobi receives the highest funding from the government followed by Kenyatta University and Moi University respectively.

Strathmore, MKU and Aga Khan University are the only private institutions of higher learning that featured in the top 10 state-funded institutions of higher learning.
