Moi University Students take to the Streets After a First Year was Raped by a Security Guard

Moi University Strike

Moi University students took to the streets on Sunday to protest against one of the Universty’s security personnel who had been accused of raping a student.

According to a report filed at the Univerisity’s Security Department and Kesses Police Station, the first year student was raped by a security guard at the university on Friday morning.

While acknowledging the incident, the Dean of Students at the university Dr. J.S Ayieko said in a statement that “it is true a student was sexually assaulted, and the case has been filed with the university security department and Kesses police station.”

The University’s student leaders were criticised by the students for their laxity in handling the matter.

“A lady is raped by a security officer in Moi University, the student leadership is summoned to a nearby police station and they rush like those participating in the Olympic marathon,” one student noted adding that this “creates the difference between Moi University and UoN. Were it UoN, the student leadership could have summoned the police instead, make them frog-jump while asking for forgiveness, act go after the security officers and make them pay for their acts in installments.”

However, as it to hid the comrades’ call action, the leaders mobilized the students to express their anger in a demo on Sunday morning.

While the Dean of Students noted that the “suspects have been arrested and investigations are underway”, it is still unclear the number of people who were involved with an unconfirmed report indicating that six security men at the university have been arrested.

The studentswent against the appeal for calm that was communicated from the school through the Dean of Student’s memo that needed the students to remain calm as investigations continue.

The fate of the first year student who was raped is yet to be identified even as students at the Eldoret-based university vowed to teach the security guard a lesson.
