#MoiMedSchClosed: Moi University closes school of medicine


Eldoret-based Moi University has closed down its school of medicine and dentistry. According to a noticed posted online, and signed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics and Research , the institution has suspended learning in the school of medicine and dentistry.

This comes following a students’ unrest at the College of Health Sciences where the school is based. Students from the school of medicine and dentistry went on the rampage on Monday 17th June 2019.

“The university management, on behalf of the Senate and pursuant to the provisions of the Moi University Act and Statutes, has decided to indefinitely close the two schools with immediate effect” read the notice in part. The students were complaining about the length of time they had to take to complete their programs.

According to the letter, the students were ordered to vacate the school premise with immediate effect.

“Our colleagues from other universities, finished school last year, and are now interns at various hospitals, sisi bado tunawekwa shule. Why only moi University?

“Do you know, that we in medical school, have been in University, Moi University, longer than we were in Primary School? And our lecturers are striking due to unpaid allowances and the school admin are just closing the school?”
