A recent Economic Survey released by the Education Cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Mohamed has revealed some shocking sexual assault statistics in Kenyan Schools.
According to the report, some 784 girls were raped, while 3,487 cases of defilement and 287 incidents of incest were reported.
Additionally, some 107 cases of sodomy and 254 cases of indecent assault were also reported over the same period.
Amb. Mohamed made these shocking sexual assault revelations during the Kenya National Union of Teachers 61st Annual Delegates Conference at the Bomas of Kenya.
During the same event, the Education CS announced that the government is taking steps to ensure safety of students.
The government will set up gender desks in all schools to stem growing number of violence against school children.
“As government, we are committed to ensuring safety in schools. We will ensure all children, particularly girls, are safe” Education PS Dr Belio Kipsang said.
“There is also a standing ministerial team working on Standard Operating Procedures to be rolled out in schools to make institutions safe and secure zones for every child,” Education CS Amina Mohamed said.
As University students, we can also work to ensure that these Standard Operating Procedures are equally adopted by our institutions.
Through the #SafeCampuses Clubs, university students can come together and work on ways of ensuring safety on campus.
The #SafeCampuses Clubs is an initiative by The Campus Lady Magazine to be rolled out across Kenyan universities in 2019.
Through these clubs, students will be able to formulate safety action plans, measures and tips to ensure their safety.
Additionally, the students will work with the university administration and the security department to end sexual assault and harassment on campuses.
With the increasing cases of sexual assault, the club members will be instrumental in stemming out the vice.
The students will also actively take part in community action in High Schools and Primary Schools to foster a safety culture.
