Tips to help you Avoid Date Rapes on Campus

I attended a dramatic birthday party early this year. To celebrate her day she, like many in the dating scene, had brought her boyfriend. It was all fun and games until we heard screams from the room they were in. He was raping her. Shocked? Yes, raping her despite being the lover. The guy received a thorough beating as we escorted the girl to a clinic. Birthday turned sour.

These cases are common in the campus life, from organized gang to date rapes. Here are a few tips to reduce your chances of becoming the ‘prey’.

Meet him in Public.

When he says “kuja nikuonyeshe kwangu” whether he is living in hostels or outside school premises, do not. Have a friend accompany you or meet at a public place such as a cafeteria, park or sports grounds. These are places many people hang around, he sure won’t try anything funny.

See him During Daytime.

If he asks you out, firmly let him know you will do so during the day. If he insists on the times when darkness has engulfed, you will realize his ulterior motives.

Avoid Night Parties.

Chances are, whether you are at a house party or enjoying the nightlife at some club in Westie, once the night ends, you will spend it in his arms. That is his calculated move as it would be late. Have a backup plan and inform friends where you are.

Stay Sober!

What is fun without drinking, smoking sheesha and weed to take you to cloud 9? If you must get high, lower levels or have a chaperone. The guys are waiting for you to lose it, to take turns in the cookie jar!

Trust your Gut Feeling.

You know that voice deep down telling you No? It senses looming danger. Don’t dismiss your instinct!
