Prospective UNSA Chair Daphine Githuku was on Tuesday arrested and spent 27 minutes at Kilimani Police station before thousands of comrades including her opponents and other student leaders flocked the station demanding for her immediate release in what has turned out to be the greatest show of might in UoN politics.
While other University of Nairobi Students’ Association Chairperson’s aspirants were busy wearing suites and taking selfies along campus corridors, Daphine Githuku was out in the streets fighting for comrades’ rights at Lower Kabete Campus.
Miss Githuku joined comrades at UoN’s Lower Kabete Campus on Tuesday morning in their protests against the death of Angelos Miano Muthee, a comrade at the campus who had been scheduled for a surgery at the Kenyatta National Hospital after a greasily road accident but died as the hospital performed the surgery on a wrong patient.
During the students’ demonstration, Miss Githuku who has emerged over time as a leading contender for the UNSA Chairperson’s position was arrested together with other comrades by the police who came to disperse the demonstrators.
As we near the UNSA election date, Daphine Githuku is emerging as a young politician that is destined to not only lead comrades at Kenya’s institution of higher learning but also assume key national leadership positions in years to come.
The Political Science student who has been described by students at the varsity as a fighter and defender of the weak was later released by the police and is still keen on defending comrades’ rights.
Speaking to The Campus Lady, Miss Githuku indicated that she will not sit down and see institutions abuse comrades rights.
Miss Githuku also took issue with the killing of the Meru University student leader by the police.
“It (the killing) was wrong . No wronger (sic) word can be used . Police brutality has to stop
“Students leadership comes with so much stakes . They don’t want cowards” she said.
